BODY:

ALPHARETTA, Ga., Aug. 2 /PRNewswire/—Jennifer Froehlich, a designer with Computer Systems Center Incorporated (CSCI) in Springfield, Va., has won first place in the third annual "Design for the Environment Contest" from Neenah Paper.

Froehlich received the top prize for an identity package developed for SemperComm, a non-profit organization founded by CSCI to “adopt“ remote U.S. military bases overseas and provide communications and other technology services to service members to help them correspond with family members. She and SemperComm each received a $1,000 cash prize and one case of ENVIRONMENT® Papers from Neenah Paper.

The materials included a reference guide, brochure, DVD case and letterhead. Together they created a unique identity for SemperComm, which provides communication services—such as television, movies, computers and Internet access—to the 75 military personnel permanently stationed at the Jungle Warfare Training Center (JWTC) in Okinawa, Japan. Desert Storm ENVIRONMENT® Papers were used for all components.

“All of the pieces were well-integrated and metal details such as a copper dog tag logo and a screw fastening on the reference guide added uniqueness to the materials,” said Gerry Rector, brand manager, Neenah Paper.

The second and third place winners and their environmental or non-profit organizations each received $500 and a case of ENVIRONMENT® Papers.

Second place went to Jennifer Nelson and Jennifer Melloan of Coates Kokes in Portland, Ore., for a collateral system of materials developed for BetterBricks, an initiative of the non-profit Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance. BetterBricks provides building professionals with information, tools, training and consultations needed to develop, design, construct and operate environmentally responsible, high-performance buildings.

“The piece was selected for the unique envelope-folder format, fresh colors, accessible content and modern design,” said Rector.

Third place was awarded to Patricia Frank Sher of Frank Design in New London, Conn., for a capital campaign piece and letterhead design for the Friends of the Oswegatchie Hills Nature Preserve in East Lyme, Conn.

“Sher’s designs were chosen for clearly defining the beauty of the preserve and making a strong visual case for contributing to the cause,” said Rector. “The ENVIRONMENT® watermark on the letterhead is a detail that truly adds to this piece.”

The “Design for the Environment Contest” recognizes the work of graphic designers for non-profit, environmental organizations that are printed on Neenah ENVIRONMENT® Papers or other uncoated paper with recycled fiber.

Materials were judged for overall look, layout, use of color and the use of environmentally responsible paper.

“The high-quality entries we received this year reflect the increased use of recycled and environmentally responsible papers,” said Rector. “All the winning entries demonstrate the printability and ink holdout of these papers, while at the same time conserving valuable natural resources.”
