A Day in the Life – Kylin
What is your title? Describe what you do.
Security Administrator. I provide subject matter expertise in all aspects of security but primarily focus on physical security for my current role.
What drew you to CSCI? Why did you choose to work here? How was the switch for you?
I was connected with someone at CSCI through a mutual friend in the community, and after talking with people who worked here and hearing how much they enjoyed it, it was an easy choice to make the switch.
The switch was super smooth. Since I had been a part of the community previously, many of the policies were the same and my coworkers were amazing with helping if I had any questions on things I wasn’t familiar with.
What makes CSCI different than your previous workplaces?
Coming from the federal workforce previously, it’s great to work in a smaller, more-close knit environment where everyone in the organization knows each other’s names.
What do you like best about working at CSCI?
The people I get to work with – my office is full of some of the most fun humans on Earth that make coming to work every day a treat. They are all very knowledgeable and make sure the job gets done.
What is an example of a success story you have had at CSCI? How did you achieve success on that project or endeavor?
During an offsite facility inspection I helped discover an issue with the construction of the facility. I then worked with my coworkers and the facility to develop a plan to rectify the issue without causing a negative impact to cost, schedule, or performance.
What advice would you give to someone looking to pursue a role like yours? Are there specific character traits or skills/certifications someone should possess?
Flexibility, a good attitude, and the ability to explain concepts to people who are not familiar with them as part of their day-to-day job are all essential in security. I would recommend anyone interested in security read up on policies across the community (NISPOM, etc.) to make sure they have a wide breadth of familiarity and know where to start looking for answers if they need them.
The SPeD Security Fundamentals Professional Certification (SFPC) never hurts!
What are the most rewarding parts of your job?
Helping to make things happen while still ensuring security is not forgotten.
What’s on your playlist when you’re focusing on a project at work and when you travel?
I always turn on my ODESZA Pandora station when focusing at work. I have different playlists to capture the vibe of where or how I might be traveling, but they’ll usually include at least one song (usually more) from Bastille, Lord Huron, and half•alive.
